Chapter

Twenty-five

Norman was watching the front door of Jeremy Cook’s home. Jeremy was yet another member of Revival Rock Ministries, and had been on Norman’s mind a lot that day. Jeremy was a younger man, late twenties, who was always trying to get Norman to give him a chance to play the drums on the worship team. It was quite a nuisance to Norman, because he already had a drummer, and didn’t want to be bothered by adding more people to the team. Everyone wanted to be on the stage with Norman, he often thought, and while he understood why—after all, who wouldn’t want to share a stage with him?—he hated bringing new people on board.

Also, Jeremy was slow.

He wasn’t retarded, not in the clinical sense. Not quite, anyway. But he was a few rungs shy of the average IQ. And the last thing Norman needed in his life was to have someone on his worship team who couldn’t count properly. He’d never admit it to anyone, and often denied it even to himself, but Norman did have an issue with timing. The drummer he played with every Sunday, in his opinion, was able to follow Norman well enough, however, so the performance rarely suffered from this malady. Though most people of average or better intelligence understood that it was the band which was supposed to follow the drummer, not the other way around.

But this never occurred to Norman.

His head seemed to pulse then and he winced, clutching the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger tightly. He recalled again the doctor telling him he needed to follow up on the X-ray with an MRI and some bloodwork to see about the mass they had found in his brain. He wouldn’t though. Wouldn’t show a lack of faith in his deity by worrying about some black spot on an X-ray image. As with the Apostle Paul in the Epistles when the snake had bitten him on the hand and he’d merely shaken it off, so Norman tried to shake off his own malady. Paul had been told by God he was supposed to go to Rome, and neither shipwrecks nor snake-bites were going to interfere with the work of the Lord set before him.

Likewise, Norman would let no masses on his brain distract him from the work of the Lord either. He’d been called, he’d been chosen, and by God, he was leading the Savior back into the world. He would not be distracted by the works of the enemy, and he knew his God would heal whatever was going on with his head.

The new Mary would not be stopped by the enemy.

He just had to have enough faith. His mother had always taught him of the importance of faith, the importance of keeping his eye on the will of God, his ears tuned to His voice. Anything else was a distraction to the work the Almighty had placed before him, and Norman’s mother had never been wrong.

Still, the pain bothered him.
